The rigging of Salt Port is a symbolic gesture to establish a tradition in the city. Rigging, that is, raising the mast over the market, is a practice that has been occurring since 2016, when the project was born.

The market is rigged annually, in December, and Mastarel’s presence has evoked a series of events on the site, becoming an exhibition and a cultural and festive space, as well as a market.

On the night of the rigging, there is a huge community celebration, whose most important moment is the lighting on the building, and from then on, it is illuminated every dusk during its permanence in Salt Port.

Like a lighthouse flashing on the horizon and signaling its presence, Mastarel is an achievement. A dream reality, a market ship, a suspended river.

A riverine and urban community, a port city that does not see its river. A delirium.

Lúcia Chedieck has been responsible for Mastarel’s lighting since 2018. Lighting designer and scenographer, she is largely responsible for activating the installation, the long-awaited key moment of Mastarel, turning on the lights; to mark the opening of a new project cycle, introducing events and announcing the start of a new edition.

With her sensitive vision, Chedieck masterfully brings light to the Port, inside and outside Salt Port Market, triggering the communitarian celebration to make the rigging effective.

Born in Belém, where she began her work in theater, as a scenographer. In the 1990s, in São Paulo, already working with lighting, she has participated in several shows, such as: Peer Gynt, by Henrik Ibsen; Enq, o Gnomo, by Marcos de Abreu, in 1991, being awarded by the Association of Theatrical Show Producers in the State of São Paulo – Apetesp; Angels in America – Millennium Approaches, by Tony Kushner, earning a nomination for the same award received in 1991. In 2004, Lúcia received the Shell Award for the lighting of Tauromaquina, by Companhia Balagan, an example of multiple and collaborative work, being nominated for three more Shell theater awards in 2008, 2012 and 2013.

Winner of the lighting project – III ABILUX Architecture Award – Projects 2006 – in the Monumental Architecture category for the project "Basílica de Nossa Senhora de Nazaré", São Paulo-SP.

Lúcia is part of the Mastarel Project team, being responsible for the lighting design for each new edition. Coming up with the suggestion to exchange the light bulbs for LED ones, as well as the use of color, a significant change to the plastic image of the installation. The artist has brought her signature and poetic gaze when creating light, whose presence is a large part of the oeuvre.
